Treating animals with reiki is a wonderful experience for both the giver and the receiver. As animals are so phenomenally perceptive, their sensitivity is perhaps even more profound than with people. And, considering that animals cannot directly express when they are feeling ill, and take affirmative action themselves (go to a vet on their own) reiki offers simple, health-giving benefits.

One lovely aspect of offering reiki to animals, is that the question of “How long should a treatment be?” is really never an issue. That is because ANIMALS KNOW WHEN THEY’VE HAD ENOUGH! They simply get restless and move away, knowing that they’ve had their ideal fill : )

Safety is another priority of Animal Reiki. Before starting any session it is your role as the Animal Reiki practitioner is to ensure the safety of the yourself, the animal caregiver, and the animal throughout the session. We have highlighted a few Animal Reiki safety tips below!

1. Animal Reiki can be done at a distance and some animals even prefer hands-off Reiki. It is totally appropriate and often safer to conduct a session outside of a stall, pasture, fence, or other type of enclosure. This is especially safe if it is an unknown animal to you.

2. While Reiki can relax a stressed or nervous animal it does not necessarily mean that it automatically changes the behavior of the animal and reaction or other behaviors can still happen.

3. Bio-safety and environmental safety are other elements to consider. Bio-safety can include changing your clothes, washing hands, etc. between animal clients or facilities. Safety considerations such as wet floors in a shelter, or electric fences are also important to remember.

Animal Reiki is such a rewarding practice and keeping safety a priority just ensures that the animal and caregiver are able to receive a Reiki session for the most relaxation possible!
